The next day March sat in a coffee shop on the southern side of Spaceport City, not far from the landing bay. In another half hour, the shuttle would land, he and Bishop would take it to Antioch Station in orbit overhead. In another two hours, the Tiger would be in hyperspace, taking them to their next assignment from Censor.

A subdued mood hung over Spaceport City after the protest. The sudden and unexpected death of Governor Harlan Valens, accompanied by the arrest of several of his political allies and business associates, had calmed the fury of the city. The news that the police had stopped a terrorist bombing that would have destroyed the Warner Building and killed thousands of protestors had also settled things.

“You know,” said Bishop on the other side of the table, holding a mug of coffee. He was a big man with bloodshot blue eyes and ragged blond hair. “Only two people died. Not bad, all told.”

“Yes,” said March.

“Could have been thousands.”

March nodded. They had won a victory over the machinations of the Final Consciousness, but the war continued.

And it was a war Jack March would fight for as long as his strength allowed.
